All of us “of a certain age” remember these guys as being a quartet of goofballs with a string of pop hits in the 1960s. However, I stumbled upon this little clip of the four of them singing a Spanish carol a capella, and thought it was simply beautiful. They really could sing, all silliness aside. Enjoy. 🙂

I guess I am officially “of a certain age” as I was one of the pre-teens enamored with The Monkees! I still remember the silliness early on with either being a Monkees fan or a Beatles fan. I rebelled and loved them both – but the ONLY time that I cut school all throughout high school was when I was in 8th grade. The Monkees were in town for a concert and a friend and I got the hair-brained idea of trying to crash their hotel. Didn't work, but it was fun trying! Thanks for finding this clip. I loved it (and had to laugh watching Peter Tork sniffing his incense)!

Thanks – There was another group about the same time that also did silly songs in the USA but were great singers in Europe. But those were the days before the world was connected by U Tube and the Internet – I am still amazed at just how much has changed since the entire/most of the world can get on the Internet. Hal

Pam — I was never a real Monkees fan; never even watched their show. However, I did like a few of their songs, and still do. It was nice to see them in this mode!
Hal — gotta love the Internet. I just happened to see the episode with this song today, and I Googled it. Poof, there it was.

I always watched their show, even though I was a hard-core Beatles fan. Davy looks so sweet in that chef's jacket, although it was called something else back then.

I was totally into them in the 80's, during their comeback! I went to their 25th reunion tour! I recall this song on a Christmas special (nick at night reruns) but had forgotten it until I heard it on siriusxm while listening to the Christmas station! This prompted me to come home and look up the lyrics and history of the song, and find the video on youtube!
If you pay close attention, Davey doesn't look too into the song, even smirking at Micky a few times and picking at his nails during the video.

Just watched it again and realized Davy had incense in his hand which is hard to see. Either way, he's not into the song!

Sarah — yes, both Davy and Peter are holding incense. You can see Peter sniffing at his. 🙂 Funny how distinctive Davy's voice was — I could hear him clearly in the four-part harmony.

They were all professionals. Davey Jones worked on the London stage in musicals, including playing the Artful Dodger in Oliver. Mickey Dolenz, as Mickey Braddock, starred in Circus Boy. Mike Nesmith had a successful solo career as a singer & songwriter, Peter tork was a folksinger. In The Monkees they had to sing Brill Building songs written for them by people like Neil Diamond..

John — yes, they all sang beautifully. And eventually, they became more skilled on playing instruments as well. I wonder how many people knew all that, though, when watching the TV show, which made them look kind of silly.

Watch this episode every Christmas and this carol is my favourite part. Mickey was a great vocalist very much underated as we’re the Monkees themselves. Show still bringing joy all these years later.
