Erica Scott: Life, Love and Spanking

Ruminations, opinionated observations, darkly humorous blathering and the occasional rant from an outspoken spanko and unapologetic attention wh–, um, hog.

Spanking “startles”

Does anyone remember these? I think they date back to the olden days of the spanking newsgroups, when people would post about seeing or hearing the “s” word in an unexpected mainstream instance. Like when one sees a sports report on the news, and the commentator says that Team So-and-so “spanked” Team Whatsis. I swear, I have been half-asleep in front of the TV and had that word jolt me awake.

Or like the time when my bank sent my statement, along with a notice that they had “BRAND SPANKING NEW BRANCH HOURS.” Do tell.

How many of you get that pleasant jolt in your belly when that happens?

It can be pretty damn funny, the extent of our knee-jerk reactions. Years ago, Danny was visiting me and we were at my computer, looking at something or another with the TV on in the background. I forget which show it was — it was either Twilight Zone or Alfred Hitchcock Presents — but out of nowhere, one of the characters said “spanking.” At the same moment, both Danny and I jerked our heads up from the screen and caught one another’s widened eyes. He said “spanking”! Did you hear that?

In an episode of The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon bragged about how hard he “spanked” physicist Stephen Hawking in a game of “Words With Friends.” (Yeah… I could have done without that visual, but it still gave me that jolt.)

And of course, I just had to see the 1994 dark comedy Spanking the Monkey, even though I knew it had nothing to do with spanking. (As it turned out, the subject matter was much darker than any spanking movie.)

Speaking of movies, my latest startle was a film review in the LA Weekly a couple of weeks ago. The headline for the review? “Goodnight Mommy gives the audience a good spanking.” Huh? What? Naturally, I had to read the review immediately, but the writer was being a deliberate tease, it seemed. Goodnight Mommy is a horror movie, and I don’t even like that genre. Apparently the level of fright and gore is “punishing” to its viewers.

More evidence of our wild wiring, I guess. What are some of your startles?

It’s been a lovely birthday week. John has told me that we are continuing to celebrate this weekend, and next as well! I don’t know why, and I don’t know what he has planned, but I am touched that he’s making such a big deal about it. Perhaps it’s because it’s the first birthday after his surgery ordeal? Of course, his birthday is October 5 but he won’t let me make a fuss at all! (sigh) Still, I have bought presents and will bake brownies. He still needs another couple of minor surgeries, but overall, he’s doing so much better, and up to walking an hour twice a day! ♥

Have a great weekend, y’all.

Pretty much every given pro football week one or more of the misc commentators use the expressions, “laid the wood” and “taken to school.” I especially appreciate when Jon Gruden makes those comments because he’s one of my few male spanker crushes. He’s loud, bold and opinionated-just like me! 🙂

  3. Anonymous — youuuuu? Bold and opinionated? 😉

Poppa — thank you for the heads up. Aw, Razor. I miss him. Glad he’s still around. And I do remember that SL scene. Humph. Clearly, not everyone appreciates my feistiness, but glad some people do!

Erica, I am a die-hard fan of The Big Bang Theory. (Actually, I’m addicted and watch reruns when I need a lift.) Sheldon may have “spanked” Stephen Hawking figuratively, BUT he literally spanked his girlfriend. And she loved it! He was oblivious though. For a sitcom, I found it quite exciting.

Wishing you a “spanking” good time as your birthday continues!

  5. Our newspapers are pretty rich in headlines that include spank, paddle, whip and strike; usually in the sports section but not always. They still give me a thrill. The latest was a reminiscence about life on a farm during the Depression: “Special Preparations for Thrashing Day” followed by a clarification that “threshing” was always called “thrashing” where the author lived.

I can remember an episode of That 70’s show where a teacher threatened to “paddle”Mila Kunis – – Ashton Kuthcher replied “wow, that would be hot!”
In an old movie called Fame is the Name of the Game, Tony Franciosa says to an overly amorous Jill St. John, “you need either a spanking, or Doris Day lessons!” On an episode of Ironside, Raymond Burr advised the parents of a recalcitrant teenage girl to administer a good old fashioned spanking to improve her mood – – -These were all snippets that I caught while half-listening to the show – – – Each case jolted me into hyper-awareness, and I would comb through TV listings trying to find a repeat. I don’t remember much from school, but any reference to spanking is locked into the hard-drive of my brain, never to be forgotten.

Even better, when Donna (Laura Prepon) was sent to the local Catholic high school by her father after she ran off to California with Ashton Kutcher’s character, she came down to Eric’s basement, still wearing her “Catholic schoolgirl” uniform and commented that “a nun totally spanked me with a ruler”, whereupon Fez observed, “Lucky ruler”…

And speaking of THAT episode of “The Big Bang Theory”, that caused quite a lot of comment in the spanko universe, especially at the LSF (Library of Spanking Fiction). I even wrote a well-received story about it.

  12. I’ve seen several spanking startles over the years so it’s difficult to pick favorites but besides “McClintock” which I assume will get many mentions, my other favorites have been “Gidget” episodes. One is where she’s bent over the back of a sofa by her sister and brother-in-law who both spank her. The faces she makes and the ouches… wow!

The other has Walter Koenig (Star Trek’s Chekov) spanking his girlfriend with Gidget remarking about it while it’s happening in the next room. Another wow!

Come on, you know you want to say something.
