Erica Scott: Life, Love and Spanking

Pet Peeve #3,482

Once again this week, lots of tragedy and bad news abounding throughout the world. What am I going to do about it? Feel bad, of course. And then I’m going to focus on small, inconsequential issues that I find irksome. Because that’s what I do.

You know what expression I really detest? Anything that has to do with “putting on my big-girl panties.” Ugh ugh UGH.

Yes, I know what it’s trying to express. It’s another way of saying, “Be a responsible adult.” It’s also extremely condescending and skeevy to me. Why? Not sure. I just know it is. You know how we all hate certain words/phrases? This is one of mine.

Kind of strange, when you think about it. Because I find the phrase “little girl” to be extremely hot, especially in scene context. I know I’m not a little girl, not even close, but something about it gives me goosebumps. “You’re in big trouble, little girl.” Brrrrrrrrrr. How come that doesn’t insult me, but “big-girl panties” does? Maybe because the latter truly does liken a woman to a child, and that doesn’t sit well with me?

When I was a kid, a common insult for someone behaving immaturely was “Act your age, not your shoe size.” I think we need to resurrect that. I’m a woman, and all my panties are big-girl panties, thank you very much.

All I know is, whenever someone says anything about big-girl panties to  me, I want to say some very big-girl words back to them.

Oh, and make big-girl gestures. 🙂

Erica's Helpful Hints #4

Anyone relate?

Have a great weekend, y’all.

I have tried to avoid ever saying that phrase to a woman. As for little girl. That phrase belongs exclusively to my finance and to her alone. As for that picture. Were you able to get that itch with your middle finger on the bridge of your nose? LOL

    Have a great as well.

  2. That phrase bugs me too!! I feel it’s the other person saying whatever is bugging me isn’t worth my being upset over. I’m the only one who can decide what bugs me, upsets me and it’s not their place to decide for me!! Maybe I’m overly sensitive. Or I really find like people to tell me what to do or how to feel or what I can or cannot be upset over!!!
I hope you have a great weekend!!!

  3. Erica, I have always hated that phrase too. It seems wrong on so many levels. Replace “panties” with any other article of exterior clothing: hat, mittens, shoes maybe? But definitely not bra! How about hairclip?

    Hugs,

My pet peeve is Hypocrisy. I know we all have to accept a certain amount but my threshold is low.
I also don’t care for the big girl panties phrase.

I think the WORD panties sounds creepy. LOL

I HATE the word quintessential, the phrase, “suck it up” and also because I’m a shameless potty mouth when outraged-pseudo swear words substituted for the real deal because they were edited for TV shows or movies. 🙂

  8. Hermione — ha! Big-girl hairclip! I guess that’s simply a larger version of little-girl barrettes, yes?

Six — yes, that was the point. 🙂

Mouse — oh dear. Shall I call them “points of irritation” from now on?

Chibob — yeah, I’m not too crazy about that either.

    A. — I can’t stand when networks bleep out cuss words and replace them with stupid phrases that make no sense. My favorite? In “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” when Hugh Grant’s character asks Renee Zellweger’s Bridget to come back to work for him, she says, “I’d rather have a job wiping Saddam Hussein’s ass.” (It was the 90s.) Edited into its place? “I’d rather have a job washing Saddam Hussein’s car.” !!!!

I hate the big girl panties expression, too, maybe because when being told that it’s usually in the vein of something I am taking seriously but not the way the (usually) bumper sticker in front of me wants me to. Plus I seriously hate the word panties. But what I’m hearing with horror is vet — or vette — or whatever it is, where people are being vetted and vetting and it’s back with a vengeance during an election that’s bad enough. It makes me feel like Joey in Friends when The Rossatron was brought up: “Is that back??” I am kind of amused anymore at the bleeping that kind of bleeps things like the “uc” in the middle of a word that rather obviously is still what it is. I’m not sure whose sensibilities are served that way – those of us who hate censorship still hear “fuck” and hate the bleep, and those who are offended by the word still know what the word was. Then again, my book club had a long discussion about “The F Word” after reading one of my picks, a fucking awesome Stephen King book. What was the point of teaching us “words will never harm us” if so many people are quailing away from scary words? (Said the girl who hated the word “panties.” And having commented herself into a corner, she slinked away.)

  12. Ariel — “panties” doesn’t bother me. However, “underpants” makes my flesh crawl! So funny how different we all are. As for “words not harming us,” I am afraid I’ve always disagreed with that one. Verbal abuse can cut into your soul like a knife.

    Mimi — OK…

    MrJ — LOL.

Not verbal abuse, wasn’t really thinking in that direction, but the “Oh, my, she said a nasty word” type thing. That five other grown women in my book club sat around discussing the “F word” that was in a work of fiction worried me. It seems so delicate and these aren’t delicate times.

      • Ariel — ah, OK. I understand. Well, you see, in some ways, these ARE delicate times. People are so freaking PC and so concerned about offending this one and that one and the other one, they’ve learned how to sugar-coat and make euphemisms out of things. So then we get people who swing the other way and spout as much vicious filth as they can utter just to piss people off. There has to be a balance in there somewhere…

I wonder if it is the inappropriate intimacy. For many things, it depends on who says it, and the feeling behind it.

Cuddling and sharing feelings about a stressful challenge is one thing, and getting it from a stranger telling you your feelings don’t matter is quite another.
